Dr. Veress writes down what metals and in how many layers are on the coin. Count the number of layers in the suggested order: Aurum: gold = 7 (4+3), Cuprum: copper = 1 (the original coin, in the middle), Argentum: silver = 6 (3+3). This gives the code for the lock: 716
